Summary

The exciting end to The Poppy War trilogy, R。F。 Kuang's acclaimed, award-winning epic fantasy that combines the history of 20th-century China with a gripping world of gods and monsters, to devastating, enthralling effect。

After saving her nation of Nikan from foreign invaders and battling the evil Empress Su Daji in a brutal civil war, Fang Runin was betrayed by allies and left for dead。

Despite her losses, Rin hasn't given up on those for whom she has sacrificed so much – the people of the southern provinces and especially Tikany, the village that is her home。 Returning to her roots, Rin meets difficult challenges – and unexpected opportunities。 While her new allies in the Southern Coalition leadership are sly and untrustworthy, Rin quickly realizes that the real power in Nikan lies with the millions of common people who thirst for vengeance and revere her as a goddess of salvation。

Backed by the masses and her Southern Army, Rin will use every weapon to defeat the Dragon Republic, the colonizing Hesperians, and all who threaten the shamanic arts and their practitioners。

As her power and influence grows, will she be strong enough to resist the Phoenix's voice, urging her to burn the world and everything in it?

A very satisfying conclusion to a debut series。 The ending won't be for everyone, but I found it to be perfect! A very satisfying conclusion to a debut series。 The ending won't be for everyone, but I found it to be perfect! 。。。more

Interesting way to end the trilogy。 Certainly left the door open to continue the story of one of the main characters in a separate series。

4。25 starsEven though this book was action-packed it sometimes felt a bit repetitive and it dragged a bit。 The ending, however, more than made up for this!

OK!!! If I am being honest I was TERRIFIED of finishing this trilogy。 This series has been so consistent in terms of pacing, character development, and conflict。。。。。sooo I go pretty far into it and wasn't ready to finish it。 TW I always like to point out that this series is about war and all of the gore/gruesome bits of war - this series is heavily influenced off of the wars that China has experienced throughout the centuries so take that into consideration。 So there is PTSD, sexual assault, dr OK!!! The first page Kuang thanks her readers and talks about them being ready with a bucket for their tears and I was called out for that。 I read while nannying and thought I could handle reading this in the carpool line。 That didn't work out。 I cried, slumped down into my seat and didn't realize the line had started moving for five minutes。。。all while being less than 150 pages in。 After this experience I knew this was a read at home in private kind of story。 So I slowly moved along and finished it and it was magnificent。 One of my favorite elements to this story is how no character is safe - not at all safe - Kuang isn't afraid of hurting her characters and it works。 The reason why this series is so successful for me is that there is no real hero, characters are grey, and how the characters have to face real conflict。 As Rin's journey continues there is a new conflict that she is faced with and none of them get easier and as the reader you can feel the tension with her。 Honestly, it is so hard to express how this is a 5/5 read for me without spoiling the book (not a fan of doing that TBH) so I am going to leave the message of please read this series, you won't be disappointed。 。。。more

So, I will be honest。 This book is hard to read。Partly because it’s a dark and gruelling journey through a country that’s tearing itself apart from every angle。 And partly because sometimes the writing style - the way it jumps from scene to scene, filling us in on various different crises - can get a little stilted/ boring。HOWEVER。 There is so, so much to recommend it。 The brutal realities of war, a complex and interesting mythology and - to my mind (admittedly I’m not too clued up on Chinese hi So, I will be honest。 This book is hard to read。Partly because it’s a dark and gruelling journey through a country that’s tearing itself apart from every angle。 And partly because sometimes the writing style - the way it jumps from scene to scene, filling us in on various different crises - can get a little stilted/ boring。HOWEVER。 There is so, so much to recommend it。 The brutal realities of war, a complex and interesting mythology and - to my mind (admittedly I’m not too clued up on Chinese history/geography and I’m aware Kuang has borrowed elements from real life) dazzling world building。But。。。 and I said this in my review of ‘The Dragon Republic’。。。 it’s the relationships that have left me scraped out and feeling hollow。 The lopsided triangle of friendship between Rin, Kitay and Nehza had me hooked。 Hooked to follow their adventures and battles。 Hooked enough to read in horror as Rin descended further into madness。And yes, in places it felt a little rushed。 But I loved this book。 I loved the concept of history repeating itself in several different ways。 I loved the backstory to Daji, Riga and Jiang。 And the way they were mirrored in our trio。Those last fifty pages wrecked me。But I wasn’t surprised, as it was clear from the very first book that Ron’s journey was destined to end in flames。 I’ll definitely be looking out for more of Kuang’s stuff。 4 stars。 。。。more

4。5 rounded up。 Woof。 Okay, so, the ending is *perfect*。 I think the author does a great job at capturing the nuances of war and trauma and the nature of power, both god-like, non “realistic” magical/mystical power and institutional/social power, being a force that corrupts。 Not simply in terms as you learn about it in fantasy tales and their roots: power corrupts and is bad, but let me show you exactly how, using real world examples。 This dresses moral absolutism down to the damn quick。 I loved 4。5 rounded up。 Woof。 Okay, so, the ending is *perfect*。 I think the author does a great job at capturing the nuances of war and trauma and the nature of power, both god-like, non “realistic” magical/mystical power and institutional/social power, being a force that corrupts。 Not simply in terms as you learn about it in fantasy tales and their roots: power corrupts and is bad, but let me show you exactly how, using real world examples。 This dresses moral absolutism down to the damn quick。 I loved that about it。 This is a very grim tale that manages to constantly get darker。 This serves the story very well and further underlines the real world correlations。 It’s so unlike western cannon and normal fantasy, and that’s a major plus for me。 I absolutely loved what happened with the Revolution and how it affected all of the characters。 It’s an interesting commentary on What If, historically, in regards to what happened in China。 I don’t want to give to much away。 But it’s very much a battle of ideas/ideologies。 There’s a lot of interesting things happening with this series and I feel like what it’s trying to do is so different and ends up all the more compelling for it。 It makes you feel uncomfortable and think about culture and (ultra) nationalism and racism/prejudice。 Mind you, I don’t think it’s a perfect accounting of these hard subjects, but the author is obviously genuinely trying to have a nuanced discussion piece, and it succeeds at doing so。 It’s effective in getting you to think about things that are normally very romanticized in western books, at the very, very least。 The only real criticism I have of this is just that it drags a lot more than the second book。 A lot is pretty much always happening, however, the decent that is this book feels slow because it’s just thoroughly demoralizing to read。 Theres no beat to let things breath and it is a grind sometimes。 There is no winning。 War is just desolation。 It’s a lot sometimes。 I also feel like this maybe could have been a really tight duology。 There’s some retreading of themes that makes some parts feel overwritten。 So, all in all just a slllllight little 。5 tick down, but rounded up anyways。 。。。more

This book was my favorite of the trilogy。 Kuang especially delivered on some of the aspects I felt were less well explored in The Poppy Wars, but which I could already see deepening in The Dragon Republic--for example, a more complex emotional landscape for our main character besides her lust for (always more) power, more depth to the relationships between different characters, more exploration into the themes of inequality and political power。 Here, these themes really came into life。 Rin's rel This book was my favorite of the trilogy。 Kuang especially delivered on some of the aspects I felt were less well explored in The Poppy Wars, but which I could already see deepening in The Dragon Republic--for example, a more complex emotional landscape for our main character besides her lust for (always more) power, more depth to the relationships between different characters, more exploration into the themes of inequality and political power。 Here, these themes really came into life。 Rin's relationship to Kitay, and the counterpoint he consistently provides to her as her consciousness, was so well done and taken to a great emotional high point by the end(view spoiler)[, and that without resorting to the easy high of introducing love or sexuality between them (despite great ship baits here and there!) (hide spoiler)]。 The uneasy love between Rin, Kitay, and Nezha had great moments even in the midst of their war(view spoiler)[: I really felt for them, classmates who had been children together and who cared for one another even as they were pitted against each other without possibility for reconciliation (hide spoiler)]。 And the thematic exploration of historical determinism (as seen on both sides) and its traps and evils was really beautifully done。 (view spoiler)[I loved that the resistance Rin offered to this way of thinking could lay the groundwork for change through her victories, upheavals, and conquest。 I also really appreciated the fact that the narrative neither simply rewarded her for her triumphs as though they had been uncomplicated or devoid of atrocities nor went the "mad woman needs to be put down" route to leave her completely unhinged as I at one point feared, but instead allowed her to see a different pathway and recognize the necessity of her own sacrifice in order to achieve this pathway, when the alternative beyond would have been further and endless destruction at terrible cost。 (hide spoiler)] Add to all of that the fun little notes: everything Venka; every time Kitay had anything at all to say; (view spoiler)[the banter between Daji, Rin, and Jiang, short-lived as it was ("Dear girl。" Daji sighed heavily。 "Stop pretending to care about ethics, it's embarrassing。"--I cackled!); Sister Petra's comeuppance (hide spoiler)]。 All in all, an easy 5 star, and I look forward to Kuang's future work。 。。。more
